As can be seen there, this is a textbook intended for adoption in upper division undergraduate courses with the same title as this book. As such, if one knows nothing about a topic addressed in the book, the treatment is both informative and interesting. However, if one knows something about a topic, the treatment seems superficial and incomplete. This contradiction seems to be an unavoidable feature of textbooks as a genre and is an observation on this kind of book rather than a criticism. J. L.
